Reasons and Solutions for Swollen and Broken Carton Boxes

There are mainly two problems that could happen to the carton boxes, one is swollen carton boxes, and another is broken carton boxes.

Today we will talk about the reasons and solutions for these 2 problems.

Firstly, the causes of swollen or broken boxes.

A. Inappropriate flute type is selected. Among all the flute types, A flute is with the highest flute height which is good against vertical pressure but weak against horizontal pressure. If A flute is chosen for a wrong carton box, the carton box could get swollen.

B. In the warehouse, the corrugated boxes are stacked very high. The boxes at the bottom are kept under great pressure for a long time. The edges and corners would be fine but the center of the box would get swollen or collapse because of the great pressure.

C. Improper dimension of the box is selected. Generally speaking, the box height should be around 2 mm higher than the content in the box. If improper dimension is adopted to make the carton boxes, they could get swollen during warehousing or transportation in case of shocking or bumping.

D. Thickness failure of the corrugated board could cause broken corrugated box. The damaged corrugated roller could lead to unqualified corrugated board, which would decrease its compressive strength, followed with decreased box strength.

Secondly, the solutions of swollen or broken boxes.

A. Select appropriate flute type. Among flute A, B and C, flute B has the lowest flute height with weak performance against vertical pressure, but is the best against horizontal pressure. We suggest customers select the most suitable flute type according to their own circumstances.

B. During warehousing, the corrugated boxes are suggested to be stacked without too much pressure to reduce the probability of swollen or broken boxes.

C. Select proper dimension of the box. To get precise information of the content to be packed into the box and to decide the right box dimensions accordingly. 

D. Control the quality of raw paper materials especially the physical index of its ring crush strength and water content. And fix the damaged corrugated roller and improve its corrugated board craft to avoid the deformation of corrugated box.

Besides, there are also other reasons that can cause swollen or broken corrugated box like failure caused by designing, printing, production, transportation and so on. We have to keep alert during every process of box making to make sure of high quality carton boxes.
